Kurt Weill — Ballad of the Drowned Girl. In love with pop and poetry. The first performance at the genteel Baden-Baden Festival in caused a booing-and-cheering sensation that inspired Brecht and Weill to develop the cantata into something full-blown.
The field was wide open, as the Krt Republic offered an ambience in which avant-garde experiment with operatic convention was rife: Yet even if the Zeitgeist was favourable, the personal chemistry between Brecht and Weill was combustible. But they also tugged in different directions.
Mahagonny: the opera that Hitler hated
Brecht was a cynical opportunist, fascinated by moral corruption and enraged by the ruling classes and their crooked dealings. Weill was a liberal, and altogether less aggressive.
He was happy with the idea that Mahagonny should be classified as an opera, albeit one that addressed demotic audiences in a fresh, crisp and accessible style — as exemplified in the gravel voice of his wife Lotte Lenya.
He wanted success, mahagonnt other words, while Brecht wanted revolution.

It is significant that he never attempted opera again, concentrating instead on Broadway musical comedy — a form that kutt him the freedom from convention that he craved without the shackles of Brechtian agitprop. Mahagonny was first performed in in an opera house in Leipzig, using operetta and cabaret singers; in Berlin, a few months later, it ran nightly in a commercial theatre.
Several revisions were made, and there is no definitive text. Yet at Covent Garden this is precisely what director John Fulljames has set out to do. Mahagonny has never before been staged in this gilded environment, and his production hopes to prove that this is its rightful habitat.
